@SuiNetwork • 2d - Let me share my own thoughts about scaling throughput in the @SuiNetwork , since I was asked. These are longer term thoughts since we are nowhere near saturating the capacity of the current network.
First, all scaling involves sharding, if sharding means doing “different stuff” that needs doing on “different machines”. So really the question is not whether Sui will be doing sharding, but rather the nature of the “different stuff”, the nature of the “different machines” and how visible will this be to end users and devs of the network.
So far my thinking has been: we would use multiple machines in each validator (the “different machines” part); and we would distribute different parts of the components of Sui over them (this is the “different stuff” part). Specifically, we would use workers around the consensus to scale sequencing throughput (see Narwhal design); we would use a distributed store for objects and history; and we would use a variant of distributed execution to scale transaction processing (see ideas around Pilotfish, as a starting point).
My other objective is to make all this largely transparent to end users and most developers. Users should just submit transactions according to the contracts and that should just work. Most importantly all assets and contracts should remain easily and transparently composable for reasons @b1ackd0g has previously outlined. Most devs, that do not write contracts that need to scale massively, should not have to think about it.
